Letter from Jane Bell, Chairman:
Welcome to the 2013 tennis season at Bickerton Tennis Club. This has been my first year as chairman and it has has been a very busy and interesting year for the club. As many of you know we were successful in obtaining a grant from Sport England, which enabled us to refurbish the courts, fencing and surrounds.
The work was completed in October apart from the final coat of paint to the courts, which will be applied in the Spring. A condition of obtaining the grant was that we have to report to Sport England the amount of usage of the courts on a six monthly basis. Work has also been completed on the clubhouse to replace the veranda posts and raise the level of the roof. We are now in the process of planning an opening ceremony, which will take place on 18th May. Details will be sent to you separately but please put the date in your diary, as we would love as many members to attend as possible.
Tuesday evening club nights have continued through the long cold and very wet winter, but as we hopefully now look forward to better weather, it’s time to encourage everyone to get out on our brand new courts.
Your membership is due for renewal on 1st April and an application form can be printed from the attachment below.
It would also be greatly appreciated if you could encourage your friends and neighbours to swell our ranks, new members of all standards are most welcome. Spare application forms are available in the clubhouse, from any committee member or from the attachment below.
The AGM was held on 24th January 2013 and attended by 9 members (3apologies). The following were elected as officers for the 2013/14 season:-
Chair: Jane Bell
Vice-chair: Celia Skellon
Secretary: Mike Boxall
Treasurer: Mark Bellman
Membership sec: Gill Ellison
Captain: vacant
Junior Representative: vacant
Other Committee members appointed were: Gill Gowers; Simon Gowers; Geoff Houlbrook and Michael Roberts; 2 vacancies.
The club’s representative on the Bickerton Village Hall management committee for 2013 will be Geoff Houlbrook.
As you can see there are still a few vacancies on the Committee to be filled so if you missed the AGM but would like to become a committee member please contact any of the current members.
Subscriptions and Maintenance Levy Having reviewed the club finances, the committee recommended that both the membership fees and maintenance levy be kept at the same rate for the sixth year running. As a consequence it was agreed at the AGM that the subscriptions for 2013/14 season will remain at: Senior membership £50 Family membership £100 Intermediate/Student £20 Junior membership £14 Court locks The combination of the court and pavilion door locks will be changed on May 1st and you will receive details of the new number when you renew your membership.
Please remember to ensure that both the courts and the pavilion are locked if you are the last person leaving the club.
Visitors Members are welcome to bring visitors to play at our club on payment of £3 per person per visit. To meet the requirement of the club’s insurers, visitors should sign the visitors’ book and the fees be placed in the visitors’ fees box (which is situated behind the door in the pavilion) at the time of each visit. Each member is allowed to bring up to a maximum of 3 visitors at any one time. However, individuals should be encouraged to join the club if they intend to play on a regular basis. Junior Coaching We reintroduced junior coaching last year. Gary Ward, who is a local professional coach, commenced sessions early in the year, which he continued throughout the summer and into the autumn. He also ran camps during the school holidays and a fun afternoon in June. We are hoping to continue these sessions this year if there is enough support. To gauge the level of interest I would be grateful if you could indicate when returning your application form to Gill Ellison if you would be interested in coaching (either junior or adult). Tournaments Once a month we organize an informal fun evening of tennis for members, both seniors and juniors, of all standards. Each player changes partners throughout the afternoon/evening and prizes are awarded for the best senior and junior. It really is intended to be fun and gives everybody a chance to meet and play with other members. Please come along on any or preferably all the dates below. The dates for the 2013 tournaments are: Tuesday 16 April Tuesday 14 May Tuesday 11 June Tuesday 9 July Tuesday 13 August Tuesday 10 September Tuesday 8 October Start time 7pm Please try to support these events. Wishing all members a really successful tennis season Jane Bell Chairman
